There were by elections in Sutton where the Lib Dems were defending a seat and in Tower Hamlets. In Sutton the by election was won with an increased vote share which represented a good result for the party. In Tower Hamlets the key battle was between Labour and Tower Hamlets First. The result was strong for Labour with THF losing out both in the mayoral race and also in a council seat that they had held.

The results continue to be weak for UKIP with a large drop in Sutton. A pattern is beginning to develop with UKIP falling back sharply in local by-elections from their May election positions. It is too early to say where this vote is going but it may be returning to the party that it left. If this is the case we could see relatively strong performance from the Conservatives in areas where there is a large Conservative vote going into the by-election.
