This week saw three by-elections in principal councils. In all three cases the Conservatives were defending. The result in Richmond was very strong with the defeat of the incumbent Conservatives. In one of the other seats we scored 10 votes and the third had no candidate.

Following on from other recent results a pattern in the post 2015 election is emerging. Where the Lib Dems are facing the Conservatives in areas of relative strength performance is strong (Mole Valley, Sutton). In other areas performance is patchy. The result in Cardiff may indicate that an anti government protest will emerge with the Conservatives performing poorly where there is a challenger and better where their strength means a challenge is hard to mount.

Labour have not performed well this week and UKIP too have show no sign of reversing their recent weakening in by-elections.
